ELA 7 Review

The past two weeks in the blog homework, we've been working on writing reviews. This week will continue that work, but the subject won't be a book, it will be this class.

Assignment: For homework this week, I'd like you to write a review of your experience in ELA 7. Please be honest, but don't be mean. I will consider your feedback when I work on planning for next year. So the more you can support your ideas with specific details and thoughtful reasoning, the more likely it is that I will use your ideas when planning next year.

  1. This year in ELA 7 I had a lot of fun. I learned many things in this class. For example, I learned how to write a memior and to spy on my brain. Also, I learned to make an annotated bibliography. Finally, I had a lot of good experiences in this class.

  2. My experience in ELA 7 was helpful to my independent reading, and it also helped me to do my blog homework and etc. I could use these strategies in the overall years to come. Even though i haven't been in this class the whole year I've learned alot. The word work also helped me learn the meaning of a word that i didnt know.

  3. ELA was honestly fun this year. I learned a lot!!!!! I became such a great essay writer. I like how we read and wrote every day because I love to read and write. It was sometimes boring but learning is boring. Last year I didn't read and write a lot so I am glad I got to this year. I loved how we weren't treated like babies and got to do work on our own. Doing work on your own makes it a lot more fun and so does not being babied. ELA this year was a great experience. It was so much fun!!!

  4. My experience has been very delightful in ELA 7, because I have learned so much that I can't wait to take with me to eighth grade next year. One thing I have learned that no matter what class it is you have to study for it or you won’t pas with “flying colors”. This is a lesson that is very important and I am glad I learned this lesson this year. I have learned this very important lesson because going through ELA 7 in the beginning of the year was hard because I saw my grade go down and down and I didn’t know what to do, but then I learned that you have to earn your grade you can’t just “wing” it. I mean I have already heard this lesson but have never really experienced this. And I thank Mrs. Puccio for teaching me this lesson. For the incoming seventh graders that get Mrs. Puccio they might think the way she teaches is hard because it is, but that’s a good thing. It shows you that everything you do isn’t going to be easy and no matter how hard you try if you don’t study and listen in class you will not do very well in her class. But that is a good thing because it really shows you, that you really have to earn your grade and it’s not just something that happens you have to work for it. Moreover, the school for me in ELA 7 was difficult, but was very a nice challenging year that taught me things I will never forget. And in all truthfulness the incoming ELA 7 who gets Mrs. Puccio are very lucky because she teaches you a lesson of a lifetime.

  5. My experience in ELA 7 was good and bad in many ways. It was good because I learned a lot that I never knew. For example I used to never have a thesis when writng my essay and closing sentences. If I never learened these things my essays would be bad and wouldn't sound right. I also got organized by always writing in my reading log when I read and getting graded on it helped me because I would never forget to read. The only bad thing about ELA 7 was that it was hard for me I used to get great grades in ELA but this year it was different I am getting lower grades. This shows me that ELA gets harder and means that you need yo study a lot or you won't do good on your book club
tests. Moreover ELA 7 was good for me.

  6. I think it was a good expirience and i think that next year you should teach the new 7th graders how to find the climax and rising action. I know that helped me in my independent reading time through out the year.

  7. English in seventh grade this year has been a good experience. I felt very comfortable learning new material this year. I always had questions which is a good thing. I felt like the whole year was pretty fair and that the curriculum was fantastic. But like every student I have complaints. One thing about the class that I didn’t like was the angle of the room. I think that once you get the smart board that will be fixed. Another thing that I wish we got to do was more creative writing. I think that Creative writing would’ve been a really good thing to do because you get to write what ever you want and just put your ideas on the page. Another thing that I think that we should do is more worksheets and a little less blogs. Yeah blogs are cool but they can sometimes get annoying. Other than those two things the seventh grade ELA is pretty good.

  8. In my honest opinion, I have never learned more in my life about reading, writing, and note taking than in this class. I will miss this class terribly when I move up to 8th grade. I think that the way Mrs. Puccio teaches and interacts with the classes is especially helpful, and it makes our classes all the more enjoyable (You also have to love it when the class clowns in period one play-argue with Mrs. Puccio; Let's continue the clowning around in lighter tones in the future, okay? The new seventh graders will love it! :3). Like I said, I love Mrs. Puccio's classes, and I will deeply miss them in the future.

  9. My experience in ELA 7 was hard working and knowledgeable. In the beginning of the school year, I thought the blog homework was confusing. But once I understood what to do I really understood what to do. I thought the teaching points and word work were very helpful. They helped me become a stronger reader and writer. But I also thought the ELA school year was a little challenging. But now I understand that the hard work I did in ELA 7 have prepared me for the 8th grade. I enjoyed being in Ms. Sills/ Mrs. Puccio’s 7th grade ELA class. I am going to miss it.

  10. My experience in ELA 7 was hard working and had been a good experience for me. In the beginning of the school year I didn't like ELA because we read and wrote too much. It was useful to me. When I came in to ELA I was a good reader and writer but, not strong. Everyday there was a new teaching point and word work. Which helped me because I understanded what to do now because it had the details. It was very challenging for me to get use of writing essay's. This year in ELA was challenging at first but, helpful. I enjoyed being in Mrs. Puccio's 7th grade ELA class.

  11. This year in ELA, I learned a lot about being an independent thinker, as well as spy on my brain (though that wasn’t my favorite). I also learned more about the parts of literature this year than ever before. Now when I read a book, I see the author’s craft and it helps me comprehend the story much better than I ever have. I can see how authors build up stories and add details to arrive at the climax. Now I have the language to explain why a book is good or bad. I had many good experiences this year in the reading portion of our English class, though I really did not enjoy taking notes because I felt that they slowed down my reading. I would have preferred to sometimes conference about the book I was reading.

Writer's workshop this year was also a positive experience. I think that the essay writing was my favorite part, because it helped me in more than just English. I also like how you had us writing alongside a teaching point for every workshop. It helped me focus in on what I needed to do. The character memoir was fun, as well. I enjoyed making up a life for someone and writing in the first person, which I wasn’t very good at before that project. I would have liked it if you had commented on our though, instead of just giving us a rubric. That would have helped me more because then I could have seen what I was doing right, as well as what I was doing wrong. It would have made me view my piece as a work in progress rather than a final grade. In all, this year, English class was a positive experience and I know that what I learned will be important to my success in future classes.

  12. I learned and got better at so much this year. Mrs. Puccio really taught us alot of tricks to help us become good readers like how to spy on our brains and our reactions. Now I can understand books and connect with characters in books alot better. I also learned alot of new words related to ELA even though it took alot of work to write down all those teaching points and word work. Mrs. Puccio also taught us to write really good essays and memoirs in writer's workshop. Also the homework was easier then all my other classes because it's on the computer, so that's good for people who don't like to open thier homework books once they get off the bus. But its easy to start failing if you are inconsistant with homework or don't try hard on tests. I think the new 7th graders are lucky if they get Mrs.Puccio as thier ELA teacher because they will have a good year and learn alot.

  13. I have never written so much. There were so many narritives, essays, stories and other things that we had to write about. But, even though I disagreed with it all, I have never enjoyed actually being there and thinking about what to write, as I have this year. It's helped me grasp a whole different perspecive on writing. My love for reading has grown, and not only am I reading in awider span, I actually remind myself of the plot and try to think about simple, good-reader-worthy thoughts.I do it instinctivly now. Ms.Sills'(I've grown so fond of that name, I might not be able to call her by any another) way of teaching and pestering us into actually doing the work, all in good humor-but strong in heart, has helped us understand everything that we have learned, and even put it all to use. So, cheers to a great all-in-all teacher and a great year in ELA.(Even if it was annoying, and boring, and tireing, and...yeah,I had a great first-year here)

  14. I personally think I learned a lot in this class. It was helpful and a life experience I will never forget anything I learned here. You have taught us a lot. I learned to be an independent thinker, reader, and writer. My favorite part was probably poetry. My least favorite part was probably all the essays we did in English. In the beginning of the year I didn’t like English because we read and wrote too much but I got used to it so I’m fine with all the reading and writing, sort of.

  15. My experience in Ela 7, I have learned alot about how to write a good essay last year I really did not understand about how to write one. I got really good at them!!! In reading I learned what a climax, rising action, and what falling action was before I had NO idea what those were. THANK YOU Mrs. Puccio!!!!!!!

  16. This year during ELA 7 was boring, but very helpful. I learned a lot of new vocabulary words. I also got to read a lot more of my favorite book genres. Like fantasy for example. I also liked reading Stargirl, Outsiders and Pigman, but I didn't really like going online to do the homework. It was very annoying and I always forgot to do the blog homework. Even though I had to do the blog homework I still did like this year in ELA 7.

  19. Last Blog:

My experience in ELA 7 was good but hard at times. I have never learned so much about writing. Mrs. Puccio really helped me with writing. Now I can write an essay in one class period. But last year writing an essay took me way longer than one class period. I hope next year Mrs. Puccio teaches the 7th graders about some of the writing skills I learned, for example when we learned different ways to write said, or laughing. That really helped me because in my essays I always use to write he says or she says but now I can write she mentioned, he repeated, she screamed, they yelled.

Thank you Mrs. Puccio for helping me become a better writer and reader.

  20. This class ELA helped me learn better writing skills and better test taker strategy’s and learn that homework makes a big effect on your grade. If you don’t do your home work your grade will go down.

  22. My experience in ELA 7 this year was interesting. I had some good times and bad times. I learned how to improve my essay writting by adding a thesis statement and transition sentences. I also got alot lower grades then I usually would have in ELA. We wrote so much this year that in the beggining i thought that by the end of the school yesr i would hate writing.

  23. This year in ELA 7 i had so much fun and i am proud of the work i have accomplished even though my grades have been a little shakey. This year i learned that ever time you write a story it dosent have to be fantasy, you just have to take time, picture what your about to write and let your pictures control what you write and while at it always stay on task. Now i understand why i was always pushed.I may not have lived up to my full potential but THANK YOU MRS.PUCCIO FOR PUSHING ME TOWARDS IT.

  24. I liked ELA 7 this year. It was fun because I had liked the book club and read-alound books that we read this year. But it was also kind of difficult for me bacause I always thought that ELA was a class that you just read books in and got easy grades. However, this year I learned that if you dont do all the homework and fall behind a little bit, it affects your grade. But it was good because it really opened my eyes to see that everything isnt just handed to you like you would like it to be and I think it was helpful for all of my classes. I had a great year with you Ms. Sills! I liked ELA 7. :)

  25. I have conflicting views of my experiences in ELA 7. One thing I enjoyed about the class was that Mrs. Puccio was a very good teacher. She made sure that all the essays we had to write were broken down into small steps. This made them easier to write and made me much more confident about my work. I think Mrs. Puccio was very good at teaching us what we had to know, especially when we were preparing for the editing section of the state ELA exam. There were so many confusing rules and I never would have understood them if anyone else was teaching me. I also liked the class because even though most times Mrs. Puccio was very strict, there were times when we were able to just mess around in class. Although the blogs were annoying and very hard at times, I think they were a good idea and really contributed to my ELA experience. The thing I like most about this class was that there were very few read alouds. I liked when we read the novels in book clubs more than when Mrs. Puccio read them in read alouds. This has nothing to do with your reading ability; I just prefer to read the books on my own.
My conflict with the class has to do with the way Mrs. Puccio assigned partners and reading groups. I never got lucky with her seating. I would like to suggest that sometimes you allow us to form our own groups. Another thing I didn't like about this class was the impossible tests. The random detail questions really aggravate me. I know Mrs. Puccio always says "They aren't random." and "These are the important parts of the book that should jump out at you." Well, they never "jumped" out at me. So overall, even though there were many things that annoyed me, I enjoyed English 7 and I definitely learned a lot!!!!!

  27. My experince in ELA 7 was very helpful. In the past years my teachers never really spent alot of time on ELA. When I came into this class I was pretty scared. Mrs.Puccio changed my attitude twords english and now I am much more confident in my work. Mrs.Puccio is very pattionate in what she does and I notice that during the class time provided that I have with her. I notice this by how much I learned throughout the wole year toping all my past teachers. I owe all of this to Mrs.Puccio and I thank her very much!

  29. English this year helped me learn a lot. I learned that when your done with a paragraph in an essay, you have to have a transition sentence. Mrs.Puccio also helped me remember that a lot is not one word, its two words. ELA this year had its ups and downs. Sometimes it was hard but Mrs.Puccio helped me through it. Mrs.Puccio helped me fix my grammar and spelling. Mrs.Puccio helped me to always when reading to write notes because later if your going to have a test, instead of rereading the book, you can just read your notes. I also learned about different conflicts in books or even in your own writing. Mrs.Puccio helped me learn a lot of literary terms. From the beginning of this year I sucked at English, now I have gotten better.

  30. My experience in ELA-7 was difficult in the beginning of the school year. As the year went on, the teaching points and work works helped me a lot and I improved. Also, the essays and book reports helped a lot when I took quizzes ans tests. I was surprised that reading a lot and spying on your brain helps you so much with details on tests. But now that I followed all of Mrs. Puccios plans for helping my grade improve I am really a lot better in ELA.

  31. This year in ELA I learned a lot. I am a better writer today than ever, all those essays that I've written was worth it. Seventh grade ELA was hard but fun. I enjoyed being in Mrs.Puccio's class. Strategies that were taught helped me throughout the year. Regardless of my grades, I liked my class and my teacher they've helped me be a better writer and reader. Thank You.

  32. This year I defiantly had mixed feelings about ELA. I thought you helped all of us improve greatly in reading and writing. You taught us how to see what is happening in our book with all of the literary devices. These literary devices included alliteration, symbolism and allusion. You also taught us how to write better essays and other writing projects. You taught us about the thesis statement and how to use detail and dialogue in our writing. I also liked that even though you were strict at times you let us have fun every once in a while. (Remember Friday) I also did not enjoy English though. Even though you were a good teacher you made us do too much writing. I think that next year (if possible) you should cut back on the writing. I also don’t think you should make people “spy on their brain” next year. I honestly love reading but the whole “spy on my brain” thing made me want to kill myself. Then there’s the fact about book clubs. Even though you don’t want people talking you should at least let students have some choice in their book clubs. It’s easier to talk about the books with people you know. Overall I had a good time this year. I am happy you were my teacher.

  33. ELA was fun for me this year, but there were some drawbacks. Next year, you should let te kids have an option on option of picking 2 book club books. That way, they can get te most satisfaction. I think you graded the homeworks a little too strictly. A smartboard would help with showing the kids important information. I also think you should get air conditioning. It's soooo hot in the room.

  34. My experience in ELA 7 was fun. I liked it because the read aloud’s weir fun and good books. Something else I liked was the book club books. We read very good books that i enjoyed a lot and wanted to read more every time. Another thing I like was Mrs.Puccio a teacher. She helped me a lot with my work and helped me have a great school year. She was very helpful with me writing and reading. Thank you:) I enjoyed your class a lot.

  35. My expirence in ELA this year was that I liked the blog homeworks because each week we basicly just focuses on one topic so we get to learn that topic very well. Also we can see other students post so it will give us a good idea on what to write and learn from them. Also, what I liked what what you plan your sections. For example, independent reading it is one whole period on a double period and we do writing for the rest of the period. And on a single period day, we just to read aloud. I enjoyed this year and liked ELA. It taught me alot even though the class was really tough. But I think I learned alot. Thanks Mrs. Puccio.

  36. This year was pretty good.I liked that we could read our own books but also experiance a book club. One thing I wasn't thrilled about was asking my partners for help. Most of the time they had as much of a clue as I did.Over all the class wasn't bad and I think i grew as a reader and writer. Thanks Mrs.Puccio for a great year. =)

  37. My experience in ELA 7 has had both positive and negative aspects. In Reader's Workshop I learned alot about "spying on your brain". Before this year, I did not realize how much my brain reacts when reading or watching a movie. This has helped me better comprehend what is going on in the novels that I read. What I did not like in Reader's Workshop were the small detail questions on tests. Even though you say these details should "pop right out at you" they often don't. This results in many students getting answers wrong on tests.

In Writer's workshop I learned alot about essay writing. I learned the proper format when writing an essay which has made my essay writing much more efficent. However, I was disapointed that we barely worked on fictional writing and poetry. I suggest that next year you decide to add in these units.

Thank you Mrs.Puccio for being a great English Teacher and for making my ELA 7 experience enjoyable! :)

  38. My experience in 7th grade english was different. It was harder then I thought but I got through it one day at a time. What I liked about this years english class is that we had to different journals Reading and Writing plus the workshops. It was different because in the previous years was nothing like this year. I liked the idea of independent reading, and not just reading it all as a class all the time. Last I liked the talk time in between reading sessons, and being able to share what you read. What I didnt like about this years expierence was that you took down the literary devices off the walls. It was easier with them up. But all together it made me study them so I would know them because I couldnt look on the walls anymore. What I also didnt like was these blogs, they were hard, and difficult to do good on. It was also hard for my to remember to do my home on the computer, but some how I always rememebered in the end.

  40. My experience this year in ELA 7 was both good and bad. I learned alot and sometimes enjoyed it. I started to like to read a little more than I used to. I also know that know I can write an essay in a few class periods. I would have never thought that I could write a 5-paragraph essay in a short amount of time. I also liked that some of my freinds were in my class, which made the experience better. I did not like the fact that ewe had to read every night because I do sports and sometimes it's hard to sit down for an hour and read every night. The blogs weren't that bad, I mean it took me a while to get started and figure them out but then I got the hang of it. I wasn't really in favor of the fact that you graded 3 of us every class period with out us knowing. Sometimes I had good days and sometimes I had bad days but you would grade us and it could be on a good day or bad day. But if you told us, then we would always be good and not care on the days you weren't grading us.

  41. My expirence in ELA 7 was some what difficult in the begining to get use to. The blog homework at first I wasn't use to it so I didn't really like it.As the year went on I learned to like the blog and new thing's in grammer. This helped me write my assinments to be better. Thank you Ms.Puccio for making me a better and more successful write and reader this year.
