This week, you will submit one response and comment to one other student.
For your response, you will select one character from each of our book club novels. You will write a comparison of these characters. Remember, comparison is how they are alike. The comparison will be complete and will use specific details from both novels to show they ways you think the characters are alike.
For the comment to another student, you will not say something like, "Billy, that was a really good comparison." You will comment in a way that shows that you are thinking about the characters, add details to support the student's point, or offer details that challenge the comparison.

Two charcters that i feel are alike are Lorraine and Ponyboy. Both Lorraine and Ponyboy are very smart. They both have very good grades but, like Darry says, they dont use their heads. Ponyboy didnt use his head when walking home from the movies and Lorraine didnt use her head when throwing the party at the Pigmans house. They were both very non sensable ideas and both ended badly.
ReplyDeleteJohnny and John are alike.They are alike because they both drink and smoke.Johnny drinks with the gang and John drinks with Mr.Pignati and Loraine at Mr.p's house.They also both smoke.Johnny smokes with his buddy Ponyboy mostly but with the gang too.John smokes a lot and Lorraine is always telling him it's bad for his health.They also have the same name.Johnny has a dad that abuses him and a mom that doesn't care.John also has a mom that doesnt care about him but his father is just mean he didn't hit John.They also have very close friends that they care about and would defend and do anything for them.
ReplyDeleteIn the novels The Outsiders and in The Pigman, Many characters are alike and different in many ways, Like Ponyboy and John are alike because they are both very determined, but different because Ponyboy on one hand is very quite and usually calm, but john is very loud, and obnoxious. Lorrain Doesn't really compare to any of the characters in the novel The Outsiders.

ReplyDeleteDally and John are both alike because they both do bad things. Dally stole things and John set off bombs. They also both smoked. Another comparison is they both hated school. Those are some of the ways Dally and John are alike.
Johnny Cade from The Outsiders is very similar to John Conlan from The Pigman. I think they are similar because they both have fathers that are mean to them. Johnny's father hits him. Johnny is described as "a puppy that has been kicked too many times." John's father is very mean to John. He put one of those round locks on the house phone to stop John from using it. John even nicknamed his dad Bore. John's father may not hit John, but John's father doesn’t really care that much about John. Both kids also responded to their fathers' abuse in the same way. They each smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol. Johnny uses the gang to get the love he wanted and needed from his father, while John has Lorraine and the Pigman.
ReplyDeleteTwo characters that I can compare are John (Pigman) and Ponyboy (Outsiders). Though they are both the main characters (One of them), they can also be compared to each other almost easily. On one hand, they both have their quiet sides, and they have their "Anger management moments". For example, when Ponyboy goes off on Johnny in the car with Cherry, Marcia, and Two-Bit, and when John has his crazy bathroom-bombing, fruit-rolling moments.
ReplyDeleteLorraine from The Pigman and Johnny from The Outsiders are alike in many ways. The first way is that they are both shy. For example, Johnny is very quiet with the gang. Lorraine didn't talk to anyone on the bus until she met. Another similarity between them is how both thier families don't seem to understand them. Lorraine's father left her and her mother, who doesn't understand Lorraine. Johnny's father beats him and yells at him, while his mother doesn't care. They are also very close to 1 friend who they can express themselves to. Lorraine is very close to John, and Johnny is very close with Ponyboy.

Two characters that are alike are Lorraine and Ponyboy. Lorraine and Ponyboy are both kind of quiet. They are also alike because they are both kind of different from everyone else. Lorraine is different because no one talks to her (except John) at school. Ponyboy is different because he likes to read and the rest of his gang doesn't. Lorraine and Ponyboy are also alike because they both have sympathy for others (Lorraine has sympathy for Mr. Pignati and Ponyboy for Randy.).
ReplyDeleteEva - I think you proved a really good point, but John's mom DOES care about him. His mom is really busy cleaning because she's a neat-freak, but that doesn't mean she doesn't care about him. And also, she told him to drink milk which shows that she wants him to be healthy.

The only difference I see between them is that Johnny "likes" it when his father hits him because it gives him a sense of security knowing that his father knows hes there. John on the other hand just hates his father. His father is always comparing him to his brother and John knows that his dad knows hes there and hates it.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Matt! Lorraine and Ponyboy are very alike. As you said they are both smart but sometimes they don't use their heads. One thing I can add to that is they are both sensitive and compassionate. Ponyboy is compassionate because he doesn't like fighting, and he tried to save the kids from the burning church. Lorraine is compassionate because she didn't want to lie to Mr. Pignatii. She felt bad for him when she collected ten dollars from him.
ReplyDeleteJohn Conlan and Johnny Cade are two characters that have much in common. The main similarity that they portray is the relationship that they share with their fathers. John has a very poor relationship with his dad. One day, his dad put a lock around the phone dial so John couldn't use it. Then, John put glue in the lock so nobody could use it. Johnny also has a horrible relationship with his dad. His dad is abusive and beats Johnny.

They also spend a lot of time with their friends to get the love that they want so badly at home, but never seem to get at home. Johnny hangs out with the gang, while John has Lorraine and the Pigman.
The two characters in our book club books that i think that are comparision is John in The Pigman and Johnny in the book The Outsiders. The reason why I thik this is because both Johnny and John are up to no good. Johnny always does somthing wrong or get himself into trouble and John does the same, they both drink and smoke. i think these two charcters are very simular and there personality and things they do are also very simlar.

ReplyDeleteCassie, I agree that John and Sodapop both like to act tough and that they treat others nicely; but how do they show it? I understand what you are saying because I've read The Outsiders and I'm reading the Pigman now. However, somebody who hasn't read this book won't get it. You would have to support your comparisons with details from the book. For example: Both John and Sodapop are good looking. Lorraine keeps describing how beautiful and handsome John is. She loves his ice blue eyes. As for Sodapop, the girls can't get enough of him. Also, when the press found out what Johnny and Ponyboy did at the church, they wouldn't stop taking pictures of Soda because he was, "movie-star handsome."

ReplyDeleteMr.Pignati and Soda-pop are similar because they both are very goofy and funny.One example is when Mr.Pignati was so happy to show Lorraine and John his pigs.Soda-pop was goofy while doing gymnastics in front of there house.
ReplyDeleteI think Darry and Lorraine are similar. Both look after their beloved. Lorraine looks after John and tries to help him make wiser chooses. Darry looks after Ponyboy, and even though his way is "unfair", he's just trying to help him make the right decisions as well. Plus, they both stand as someone important to the other person or help give the character a more...realistic type of persona.

They are alike because John from The Pigman was very outgoing and wasn't afraid to do what he wants. The same goes with Dally from The Pigman. They are also alike because in some way the care about someone in each book. For example, John from The Pigman cared about Lorraine and so far Dally cares about Ponyboy. Another reason why they are alike is that they both have friends almost like family that love and care about them.

to characters that i feel are the same are dally form the outsiders and john from the pigman. the are similar because the both drink and the also get into trouble. john use to get in trouble by setting off bombs in the boys bathroom and rolling rotten apple in class. dally go in trouble with the police for like starting fights. thats how these two characters are similar.
ReplyDeleteIn the two novels The Pigman and The Outsiders I think that Johnny from The Outsiders and John from The Pigman can be compared the best. In the book Outsiders Johnnys' parents always beat him never got attention from them. His father was also an alchoholic. In the book The Pigman John his father is an alchoholic and doesn't pay attention to John. Because of his fathers' alchoholism John started to drink beer and also smoke, but they both have good in thier hearts.

Another way they are alike is that both of them have one really close friend that they talk to and hang around with. Also Johnny and Lorraine’s families are alike Johnny’s family seem like they really don’t care, his father also has a lot of problems and it shows he doesn’t care much about Johnny. Lorraine’s family is similar to Johnny’s, because her father shows her really didn’t care and left Lorraine and her mom when she was little. Those are the ways Johnny and Lorraine are the same.

Lorraine got caught by the cops and Ponyboy got mugged. In a way they both have good and bad things happen in a similar way.

Darry cares for Soda and Ponyboy because they have a curfew and he works to help them get what they want. Lorraine is responsible because she makes John not be bad. She tries to stop him from taking full advantige of Mr. Pignati.

ReplyDeleteThe characters I think are alike are Johnny (The Outsiders) and Lorraine (The Pigman). Johnny and Lorraine both had problems with their parents. Lorraine's mom is always finding negative thinkgs to critisize Lorraine about. She never says anything possitive to her. Johnny's father beat and ignored him. His mom didn't care much about him so she hardly paid any attention to him.Also they are both kind of quiet in parts of the stories.Johnny and Lorraines problems with their parents and their being quiet stood out to me as a similarity between the characters in each book.
ReplyDeleteIn the novel the Pigman and the Outsiders two characters are very similar. I would say John and Darry are similar in many ways. One way they are alike is because they both get into trouble, for instance John would go drink at the cemetery. Darry drinks also, and gets in tons of fights because he is in a gang. John wouldn’t care about things like when to get home at night, and Darry is the same way. In two different books these characters are very alike and I would call them the bad characters of the book because of the way they act.

ReplyDeleteAshlyn that is a very good comparison between Jonny and John from the Outsiders and The Pigman. It seems like Jonny and John have a very similar home life. Jonny and John must have had it hard if their dads were always drinking and not caring about anything. I can tell that it affected Jonny more because he shows it and will tell Ponyboy. I don’t think that John cared as much because he didn’t complain about it, he just said that his dad was an alcoholic. These two characters have a big comparison especially between the dads and home life. This showed me that two people that I didn’t think were alike can be matched up in different details from these novels.

Johnny’s parents may neglect him but John’s dad cares about John. He may be treated as a bad child but that is because he is. The only thing John’s dad wants is for John to have a good life. He’s pushing him to make good decisions because he wants the rest of John’s life to be good and not in any way difficult or struck with hardships.
ReplyDeleteTwo characters I feel are alike are John and Ponyboy. They are alike because they both don't understand their guardians feelings towards them. Ponyboy and John both think their guardians are serious and don’t care for them. This is all wrong though. Dally and Bore do expect great things from them and do expect them to do better but that is because they want a good life for them. They want them to have opportunities so they don’t have to live forever in the bad side of town. So they don’t have to raise a family on the streets. They show this by trying to give them opportunities. Darry gets Ponyboy to get good grades while Bore tries to get John to work with him at the Stock Exchange and try to get him turn his life around and stop being a troublemaker.

Like, Darry is mean to Ponyboy but its only because he really cares about him. And Lorraines mom is some-what mean to Lorraine but its only because she wants the best for her.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what Eva said in her responce, but they also drink and smke for different reasons. John knows its bad for him, but he does it to show he really doesn't care about the rules. And Johnny knows that smoking and drinking is bad for him, but he still does it anyway. Johnny only really does what everyone else in his gang does, I bet if none of he's friends smoked or drinked he wouldn't. But John smokes een though none of he's friends smoke. So they both have different personalities. Johnny goes with the flow, and John does the oposite just to show he doesn't care. Even though they have very similar in a lot of ways, doesn't mean they have to same personalities.

Some characters from each book would be Lorianne from the Pigman and Ponyboy from the Outsiders. They are both very similar because they both know how to use there heads and are very smart. Another way that these two characters are alike are that they both have good friends, for Ponyboy its Johnny and the rest of his "crew" and for Lorianne it would be John and the Pigman (Mr. Pignati). Another reason that these two are alike are that they both wrote the book. Lorianne wrote the Pigman with John and Ponyboy wrote the Outsiders.

ReplyDeleteIn the book Pigman, John is very much like the Character Dallas in the outsiders. John and Dallas are alike because they both are huge trouble makers. John is a trouble maker because he threw a huge party which turned out to be a huge desaster,bombed bathrooms in school,and did prank calls which then his father locked the phone. Dallas is a huge trouble maker because he starts fights, and rudely went up to two girls and started messing with them. They are also alike because they drink, smoke, and do things they are not supposed to do.

Not only did Johnny's father not care for him, his mom also did not care for him either. But one thing that they are different is that Johnny is more of a shy type while John is an outgoing person. For Johnny, his dad beats and treats him very poorly, whereas John's father locks the phone dial to prevent John from using the phone.

In The Outsiders Johnny doesn't like to fight because he doesnt like to hurt other people. In The Pigman Lorraine is very nice to Mr.Pignati when they first meet eachother. Also Lorraine felt bad when she took the 10 dollars from Mr.Pignati because she got it off of a prank phone call. Another reason i think that Johnny and Lorraine are alike is that they are different from other people. Johnny is different then other people because he like to read and watch movies and everyone els like to hangout with their friends. Lorraine is different then everyone els because she moved into the area where she lives now recently and she is stil trying to fit in with the crowd.

ReplyDeleteJulia i would have never thought of Dally and John being alike. I like how you said that they are always getting into trouble because they really are! Maybe you could have included that they both barley show emotions. They usually act cool and normal all of the time. Also they are both kind of loners. Dally is pretty much always by himself unless something special is going on. John just likes to do what ever he wants to do and usually doesn't hang out with groups of people.
ReplyDeleteShannon- I think that you are right about the comparison of Ponyboy and Lorraine, except I see one difference. Lorraine is always worried about everything, while Ponyboy seems to be a more carefree person. I also would add that both Ponyboy and Lorraine sometimes do careless things, like Ponyboy running away and Lorraine throwing the party at Mr. Pignati’s.
ReplyDeleteTwo characters that I feel are similar are Johnny from The Outsiders and Lorraine from The Pigman. Both Lorraine and Johnny are sensitive characters who are constantly worrying. For example, Johnny is always afraid of being jumped by the socs and Lorraine is always afraid of bad omens and consequences. They also don’t have strong maternal figures in their lives. Lorraine’s mother is too busy to have a relationship with her, and Johnny’s mother ignores him. Johnny and Lorraine are uncomfortable in most social situations. They each maintain a small circle of close friends. Lorraine doesn’t have friends at school besides John because she’s shy; while Johnny, in the beginning of The Outsiders, was described as “a puppy who has been kicked too many times.” He doesn’t talk much because he’s afraid he’ll say the wrong thing.
ReplyDeleteDally and John are two characters I find alike. One way that they are alike is that they both are troublemakers. For example John is called the "Bathroom Bomber" becuase he sets off firecrackers in the boys' bathroom. He also organizes his whole class to roll rotten apples across the classroom floor, and when his father put a lock on the family phone, John filled the lock with glue. Dally was in jail, he gave a gun to a fourteen year old and a sixteen year old. Ponyboy also said Dally hated to do things the legal way, he didnt care if there was a law or not.
ReplyDeleteI agree with John. They both have some issues with their family. Their fathers dont show them love, so Johnny gets love from the gang, and John gets it from Lorraine and the Pigman. I think you used good detail from the text to support your answer.

ReplyDeleteI do agree with you that John and Johnny have a very similar personality and both smoke and drink. The reason the characters are alike is because both of them have fathers that are mean to them and don't care about them. Johnny has the gang as his family and John has Lorraine.

The 2 characters that I think are similar are Dally from (Outsiders) and John from (Pigman. They are both because Dally gets in trouble by getting caught by the police. Also he Dally smoked and drinked. John set off bombs in the boys bathroom but didn't get caught. There the same because they both drinnk and smoke.

ReplyDeleteTwo characters that I think are alike are Sodapop and John. In The Pigman Lorraine states that John is good-looking and in The Outsiders Ponyboy says that Sodapop is handsome. Although it isn't just their looks that Sodapop and John have in common. Sodapop and John also are alike because they do what they want to do. At one point in the book John's father is talking to John about them working together, although this isn't what John wants to do so John tells his father no matter how mad he knew his father would be. I know that Sodapop does what he wants to because he dropped out of high school. Sodapop could've graduated high school and gotten a well-paid job but instead he dropped out.

Two characters I think are alike are, Mr.Pignati and Ponyboy. Why I think they are alike is because there both different. They both stand out of the group that there in. Mr.Pignati is always nice, and so in Ponyboy.

Two characters that I feel are alike are john and John. Both there fathers are bad parents and like to hit them. The only difference is John from the outsiders wont stand up to his old man and likes getting hit and John from pig man stands up for himself.

Dally likes to steel stuff from anywhere he can and John likes to set off bombs in the boys bathroom next to the principal's room. Dally and John both dislike school.
ReplyDeleteI think that John From the"Pigman" and Ponyboy from the "The Outsiders" are alike because they both act without thinking, like when John wanted to have a party at the Pigmans house while he was in the hospital, because of this he got arrrested. Ponyboy was walking home from the movies one night and 5 socs almost killed him. If both oof the thought about what they were doing they could have prevented what happened.
