  1. One reading strategy I find myself reading alot is rereading. I think I use this strategy alot beause sometimes I challenge myself to read harder books and it seems confusing at first. For example, when I read the book INKHEART for the first time I read the first chapter twice to try to "read between the lines" to learn more about what was going on and about the characters.
One reading stratgey I don't use enough is context clues(trying to find the meaning of a word by reading around it). I think I don't use it enough because when they're is a word in my book I don't know I skip it and don't really care. I think I do that because I don't think it would really matter to the book. Maybe it would help to think how this would effect my understanding of the book and also my volcabulary.

  2. One strategy that I find myself using in my writing peice is "show don't tell". By using this strategy I think that my story's get better and that people that read my story really gets into the moment.
One strategy that I dont use enough is "dialoges". I think that if I did use dialoges alot in my story the readers will know who's speaking would not have to guess on who's reading

  3. One reading strategy i find myself using often is that i visualize. I think i use this strategy so much because my brain needs to see the image to be able to know whats going on in the book otherwise i wont understand it. For example in the book im currently reading, it describes how one of the charecters is freaked out by something and i can see what his face looks like in my head.
One reading strategy i know i dont use enough is spying on my brain. I dont use this strategy much because i dont really like to write what im thinking down on paper, i like just reading through because i know what im thinking and i dont have to stop. Maybe it would help me to just get over it and just write and then i might use this strategy more.

  4. I find my in my book because i find a book that has different kinds of stuff i like. Then when im done reading i look at my mpage and say wow im almost done

  5. On reading Strategy I know I don't use enough is using strong verbs to communicate the details of the action to the moment. I think I don't use this strategy much because I'm more formiliar with those words. Like, "What are we gonna do" Jared said, instead of "what are we gonns do" Jared whined. Even though I like the second one better,I don't do it all the time.Maybe it would help me to expand my vocabulary on verbs and then I would use this strategy more.

  6. One reading strategy I find myself using often is making predictions as I read. I think I use this strategy so much because my head likes to use information it already knows to try and guess what will happen next. I sometimes get excited to make predictions when I read a foreshadowing line in a story. For example, when I was reading Summer Ball, I predicted that the girl was going to meet Danny at the camp because of a line earlier in the story. This line was "I hope it was alright that I gave Tess the address to the camp."

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is synthesis writing. I sum everything up in my brain, I just don't write it all down. I think I don't use this srtategy enough because I am used to just synthesizing in my brain and not even realizing I'm doing it. Now that I have to keep a journal it forces me to write down the things that are popping into my brain. Maybe it would help me to write as soon I find myself thinking about the story and then I would be using this strategy more. This would probably help me hold onto a story longer because I can look back at my notes.

  7. Samantha and Michael - You have not responded to the question, so you don't have credit yet. Remember, we are in the Independent Reader's blog. Please read my posts carefully - the assignment specifically says "reading strategy."

I'm afraid you both need to redo this to answer the question properly.

The blog in Writers this week is called "Publishing."

  8. One reading strategy that find myself using often is to drop myself in that moment, and writing who, what, when, where, why and how. I think I use this strategy so much because is because when I think of a happy moment to drop in that moment cause I clearly remember and because I had so much fun in most of my memories. For Excample: Rachel and I went for a walk at noon getting ready for lunch as we walked down a street cause the house was still as everyone slet till noon.

  9. When I'm reading a book I make predictions, a lot and I never really pay much attention to them, somtimes I don't even notice if I was right but I've been "spying on my brain" as Mrs.Sills says and I have been writing down my predictions. Sometimes before I start reading my IRB I reread my predictions so as I'm reading my book I can see if they were proven.

  10. One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is that when im reading i dont do the reader response in the RR section. I think I don't use this strategy much because im so into my book and i dont want to stop my book. Maybe it would help me because i were to ever drop my book and then i go back to it, i could just go and read what happened and then i would be okay.

  11. i agree with michaela, im always rereading also. I think that I use this strategy alot because i forget what happpened last so i need to remember so i go back and reread.

  14. One reading strategy I find myself using often is i take notes I think I use this strategy so much because i use up more than one page taking notes For example,a time i was reading i stopped to take a note and i used like two pages.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is keeping track of when i read I think I don't use this strategy much because it gets anoying Maybe it would help me to get a better grade and then I would use this strategy more.

  15. I agree with Noah, I like to predict whenever im reading.Sometimes I even predict when I dont know im predicting. The only thing I dont like about predicting is that we have to write it down in our Readers notebook.

  16. One reading strategy I find myself using often is that I visualize while I read. I use that stratedy so much that I don't even realize I'm using it. For example, I was reading a poem last time. I was visualizing it so I got what it means.
One Strategy I am having trouble is when I spy on my brain. Everytime I literally forget that my brain has thoughts, so I have to stop and jot down what my brain is thinking. When I am very concentrated in reading, I don't use this this stratedgy much because I always forget that I have to write down my thoughts. Now I will try to pause on every page and try to think what my brain has to say to this page and write it down.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Noah, when we write down the synthesis writing I usally write down what I read in that session and so I don't think it will be that hard. You should try to just write down what you have read and put more details in it to make it interesting.

  18. One reading strategie I know I don't use enough is taking notes (or "spying on my brain")on the book I'm reading. I think I don't use this strategie enough, because last year we didn't have to take notes on our thinking, and I get really into the book I'm reading and forget to take notes on my thinking. Maybe it would help me to try harder to pay attenion to my thinking and write it down what I'm thinking, then I may use this strategie more.

  19. A reading strategy that I use alot is that I make predictions and inferences while I read. It is my instinct to wonder what will happen next, and to conclude things in my mind based on actions in the book. For example in "Thank you m'am" , when Mrs. Jones yelled at Rodger for stealing her purse, I could naturally infer that Mrs.Jones was mad. I was also predicting that Mrs. Jones was going to call the cops.

A reading strategy that I do not use that much and struggle with often is writting down what I'm thinking. Like Noah and Footballgirlnfl, I am so into the book that I do not want to stop and jot down what I'm thinking. I think a way that I can solve this problem is if I spy on my brain a little bit more so I can better know what to write down. I could also think about the strategies that Miss Sills has us write down and to think about if we have used them already while reading my book. If so I could write them down. Maybe if I follow these methods I will be able to use them more as I read.

  20. NOAH I do that to it helps me alot and i usally amwrong though. It helps alot though.

  21. One strategy that I find myself using often is that I re-read it if I don't understand it. I think that because if I read a sentence in a book and I keep on staring at it I feel like I have to read it over again. So I do. Also another strategy I use when I read is thinking thoughts to myself so I can get in the book with the characters and picture myself as if I was one in the story. For example when I was reading the book "The Candy Shop War" I was thinking that I was Summer and I had to defeat the evil Mrs.White. I use that strategy because I get into more books and it gets interesting while I read.

  22. footballgirlnfl--
I agree with you. Sometimes I also forget to write anything in my RR section because I'm "lost in the book". I like to think in my brain and not write down anything. But I find that using RR helps me get my thoughts down and helps me make new predictions and theories. Something I do to remember is at every chapter end I write down important things that happenened and thoughts I have about it.

  23. One reading strategy I find myself using often is to reread things espacaily when its loud.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is to read aloud.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Kim you know I never tried making a prediction because I usualy just assume what will happen.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also agree with you footballgirlnfl if your are into a book and you can't stop reading you will forget about writing your responses in yor RR section in your Readers Journal.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Matt Gugliemo, I also find myself visualizing a story very often. I think we do this so much because authors try to make the reader visualize their writing. It is so much easier to understand what is going on in a story when we can picture the events in our mind.

Matt, one way to help yourself get better at the writing thoughts in your notebook is to turn it into steps, and work your way up. First, make a goal to write at least one thought per chapter. Then, try to write one thought every few pages and so on. This might help because it will get you to progress in writing thoughts until finally you have a breakthrough and are used to the idea of writing. I hope this helps.

  27. One reading strategy I find myself using often is making a picture in my head of what's going on. I think I use this strategy so much because when I visualize, I can understand things so much better, and it's also like watching it happen instead of reading it, which makes it exciting. For example, the other day when I was reading I didn't really understand this one character's emotion so I made a mental picture of what his actions and words were (being quiet, seeming distant), and I figured out that he was upset. One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is rereading, instead I ponder what it means. I think I don't use this strategy much because when I start rereading, my thoughts tend to wander, and I lose my train of thought. Maybe it will help me to reread it once, and if I don't understand it, I can ask a friend or family member, and then I would be using this strategy more.

    ReplyDelete
  28. One reading strategy I find myself using often is the strategy when we make a prediction. I think I use this strategy so much because I like to know what will happen next so I realy try to guess. For example when MS.Sills read her P.N and said that she remembered being tucked in by her dad EVERY OTHER WEEK END I predicted that her parents where probably divorced or her dad worked alot so they didnt see each other often.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is that I dont really retell what happened in the time I read. I think I don't use this strategy much because it is sometimes hard to explain with out writting alot or with out just telling the thing by sumary.Maybe it would help me to read a little then to write what happened or to just tell the very important things and then I would use this strategy more.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The strategie I find my self using often is prediction because when you are in a book that leaves you with a good chapter you just stop and think well what will happen next and you go with that then when you find the answer to your prediction you think well "my prediction was correct because... and stuff like that.I mainly find predicting better for me because 1. im used to using it and 2. it helps me better to understand my book.

    ReplyDelete
  30. One reading strategy I find myself using often is asking questions to myself. I think I use this strategy so much because I`m use to always asking questions and trying to figure things out. For example, in my book Heat by: Mike Lupica, Michaels father died, so i asked myself why did his father die. I just really wanted to know why and how he died.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is Spying on my brain , just like Matt. I think I don't use this strategy much because it`s just complicated for me and im never really thinking about what my brain is saying. Maybe it would help me to think harder and pay attention to what my brain is telling me. If I keep working at it, then I think I would use this strategy more.

  31. One strategy that i find myself using is the" show don't tell.I usually find myseld in the middle of a good book and just have to share. But sometimes i have a problem because the book doesn't show enough detail and i find myseld in the middle of a story and don't know what is going on.But usually i ask you for help and you help me, but i think i should stay after for a little more work.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Matt, I have problems with spying on my brain as well. I think if you worked harder as im doing, then i think you will do better on that.
    -Anthony Smith

    ReplyDelete
  33. Kim I also seem to predict alot to and not to do as much of all the other things we are supose to do.One thing that I really dont do is to tell what has happened through out the book during the time I read

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kim does that actually help you, because I know that when reading my book I never look back at my predictions I just reread either the last couple of sentences or I reread the last couple of pages. But if what you do works better then I might try it to see if it can help me.

  35. One reading strategy I find myself using often is rereading . i often use thi=is reading strategie to find where i left off and to remmeber and get a better understanding of whut i read. in the book brians winter by gary pualson brian is making a new bow and i didnt understand a lot of wut he was doing to make the bow so i reread 3 times and finally understood

    ReplyDelete
  36. i also agree with micheala britney i use rereading to find where i left off reading but i also use it to understandmore about wut i alreaddy read.....i often get stuck on one page or paragraph that i dont get so i reread it till i get it

  37. One reading strategy I find myself using often is when i'm writing I try to play the scene as a movie because that helps me with whats going to happen next.

    -payton.

  38. One reading strategy I find myself using alot is when I am taking notes on my thinking I find my self making perdictions and inferences. I think I use this stratagie so much, because I'm like thinking about the book and what could happen next. For example there was this one chater in my book called "Disaster Strikes" so I was making at prediction that they characters in my book would get into a fight.

One way to remeber to log your time is when we do reading time during school set up the next date and fill it out, then when you go home and read all you have to do is put in the time you read.

  40. One reading strategy I find my self using is spying on my brain. I do this beacuse its eacy for me. I read and when I hear myself thinking of something and I write it down. One reading strategy I dont uses enough is I dont draw pictures of the scene I see.I think it takes me to much time and i want to know what happends next and keep reading.

    Payton,
I also like to see the scene as a movie because it helps me understand the book better.

  41. Miss.silla this is a redue. One reading strategy I find myself using often is making inference based on the text. I think I use this strategy so much because I think that I think so much mostly when trying to understand things. For example, like if a students standing outside the princible's office I would think he's in trouble.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is stop and jot.I think I don't use this strategy much because I'm too in my book and I won't stop and jot.Maybe it would help me to start stopping every few pages and make pages where I have to stop, and then I would use this strategy more.

  42. One reading strategie I find myself doing a lot is I read 75% of the book then if I dont like the part that I am reading in the book and it doesnt get better I stop and put the book down and read a different book. One reading strategie that I find myself not doing a lot is really understanding what I am reading because I am reading so fast i dont remember what I read.

  43. One reading strategie that I think I have the same problem with someone is rereading books, sentences, chapters. So I agree with Michaela because I have read inkheart and I am reading it again because I liked it so much.

I agree with shannon too about when I am reading I picture what is happening in my head.

I agree with footballgirlnfl one thing I dont do a lot is the RR. When I am reading I forget to write down what I am thinking in my head. But on the plus side ms sills always says to me remember to write the RR that helps me to remember.

  44. One reading strategy that I find myself using often is when I stop and jot I try to think of what the character is thinking or feeling because it gives me a better prospective on the character.
One reading strategy that I dont use enough is "spying on my brain" I guess I dont use this strategy enough because I dont really pay attention to what my brain is saying when I read im just paying more attention to my book.

  46. I agree with Todd because like when im reading something and im almost done reading it, I usually lose my place so I just reread the whole page again and try to find my spot again. But also it helps you get more info about what your reading too, so it's also a good thing.

  47. Payton I think that it is use full to use make a play in your head. I all so do that because it helps me to see whats going on in the story an it let's me see what I can and in and what I can do to make it better.

  48. One reading strategy that I use the most is to put myself in the character's shoes. I think I use this strategy so much because if the character is in a tough time, I want to be able to be that character for a minute and see how I would feel like to be him or her.

    ReplyDelete
  49. One stratagie that I find my self using alot is personification. It helps make the story more interesting and it also makes the reader be able to put themselves into the story. I think I use this stratigie alot because I feel like it adds an extra interest into a story and it also can make th reader laugh if it is meant to be funny. For example in one of my stories I wanted the reader to imagine a wave at an ocean crashing over you. So I used words like Crash, boom, cabang I think that put the reader right into the story. One reading stratagie that I don't use very often is dialogue. I have trouble with dialogue because I was never taught to use dialogue the right way. I think I don't use dialogue that much because I never Know what voice to use, maybe it would help me to get help from somebody and I think that would get better at dialogue.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I agree with Noah I can visualize the story very easaly It is very easy for me to feel like im in the story, and if it is a good story it is even more fun to put your self in the story. I also think that putting yourself in the story helps me read better.

  51. One reading strategy I use are predictions. I love to guess at whats going to happen next even if my predictions end up being wrong.Like I made the prediction that Roger from "Thank You Ma'm" would end up staying with Ms.Luella .He didn't but it was still a good prediction.

i usually don't use the RR because i'm so into my book and I read just before bed and don't really think about it. It could really help me put my thoughts down so later i can see if I was right or wrong.

    (comment on someones response)
Hey Payton I do the same thing it really helps to see whats going on in the story. Especially when you have an assignment to draw a picture of a scene in the text.

  52. One strategy I find myself using very often is putting tabs on the characters in the books I read. The reason I use this is because it helps me to predict events and connect or get to know chracters better.
A strategy I don't use very often is writing down my thoughts. I don't use it very often because I don't like to interrupt myself from reading. If I use it more often then i'll never get confused about what im reading because i'll use those moments to wrap together all I had read. I think i'll use this strategy more, especially when i've been reading for 2 hrs straight:)
    PEACE!
    P.S: I'm sorry if i've ever written any run-on's.

  53. One reading strategy I find myself using often questions. Almost all of my "spying on my brains" are questions like, why did he do that? isn't he friends with her? But I think that I should stop writing so many questions and start writing more predictions. I never think about whats going to happen next, unless a part in the book ends up being really good. But that's what I think I should improve on. I think I use this strategy so much because I want to know why the character feels a certain way. For example.. in my book "My Sisters Keeper" Jesse is burning down a metal shed but I want to know why! One reading strategy I don't use enough is predictions and looking up words... Some of them I don't get but like Michaela said context clues. I think I should use them a lot more. I don't think I use this strategy much because I ask questions because like I said I want to know why the character feels a certain way. I also feel I don't use context clues(like Michaela said) because I never think to use them.-Kaity Talmage

    ReplyDelete
  54. I agree with Michaela I think that I do not use enough context clues because when I come across a word that I don't know I just kinda avoid it but I should either go online, use a dictionary or ask a teacher. I think I should improve on that a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  55. one reading strategy i find myself using alot is asking questions. i use this readng strategy because i thnk it helps me uderstand the book better. for example in my book "lush" i wanted o know more at he end like did her dad go backto drinking or did he give it up im curious. one strategy i dont use enough is pying on my bran i reaally dont undersand the whole concept of hearing what my brain is saying.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree with Todd rereading will help you understand the book better. I think i shold re read more.

    ReplyDelete
  57. One reading strategy I find myself using often is trying to spell the word out if I dont get it or I will skip it then I will come back to it and try to sound it out. I think I use this strategy so much because I dont get a lot of words in some of the books that I'm reading. For example,...everytime i come up to a word that i dont get I use it.

  59. Please complete the following and add appropriate details to support your thinking.

One reading strategy I find myself using often is using dialogue. I think I use this strategy so much because it makes my writing sound better. For example,The sky was high when i went on my cousins motorboat.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is using dialogue. I think I don't use this strategy much because it doesnt make my writing sound as good. Maybe it would help me to try using it a little more often. and then I would use this strategy more.

  61. Please complete the following and add appropriate details to support your thinking.

One reading strategy I find myself using often is using personification. I think I use this strategy so much because it helps me. For example,The chops of the other boats made my boat jump.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is dialogue I think I don't use this strategy much because it is harder to use. Maybe it would help me to use it more and then I would use this strategy more.

  62. One reading strategy I find myself using often is mental images i picture the book in my head all the time. I think I use this strategy so much because my brain is always thinking so wht my brain is reading is making a pic about it. For example,if i say the old ham burger had mold on it with fies flying around it i can picture it in my head.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is... I think I don't use this strategy much because... Maybe it would help me to... and then I would use this strategy more.

  64. One reading strategy I find myself using the most is "spying on my brain". I think I use this strategy so much because whenever I'm reading my IRB I always ask myself (my brain) A question or something. Here is an example, "I think this will happen next. Or, "Why does she want to do this, "How old is he". One example I wrote for my book was, "I feel that Alison was a very kind girl and did not diserve to die." Also, "Why did Alison die?" Those were some thoughts my brain was "spying on." Once Ms.Sills tought us that strategy, I liked writing notes about my IRB and it made it a lot easier.
One strategy I think I don't use enough is "synthesizing". One reason I don't use this strategy enough is because I'm not so sure how to use it and I'm not sure what it means. Maybe it would help me to talk to Ms.Sills about this strategy and maybe visit her for extra help. Then I would use the strategy more.

  66. One reading stradigy I feel myself doing often is the protaganist, the antogonist and the conflict. I think that I use this stradigy alot because in every story the is the antagonist, the protagonist, an the conflict. You get that there is a problem in the story and there is always an main character. for example, the story seventh grade victor was the proagonist and the anger within him was the antagonist. The conflicit was, trying to ask Therea out but the fear inside him wouldnt let him.

One reading stradigy I know I am not using alot is writing my synthesis writing.I think I am not uing this stradigy much because I am dieing to see what happens next.Maybe it would help me to get an assigned page to do the synthesis writing and then I would use this stradigy more.

  70. One reading strategy I find myself using often is envisioning in my head the books storyline. I think I use this strategy so much because It seems like the book is so much better. It really does play like a movie in my head. I like using this stategy because it is almost like im the directer and the whole movie changes after every word I read. For example, when the author gves a good discription of a charater my image of them changes.
One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is stoping and jotting. I do it but its a pain. I think I don't use this strategy much because it's like post-its in Puaski they were so annoying. They interupt the story like a cellphone going off in a movie.Maybe it would help me to try to do it more often but wait for a paragraph or page to end then jott what I was thinking of down. I'll try to stop and jot more.

I think I use this strategy so much because it helps me get into and understand my reading beter.
For example, If a fight scene were about to happen, I would make an inference on who is going to win. Then I root them on and hope they are the winners of the battle.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is stopping and jotting.
I think I don't use this strategy much because I get into a book and I really don't take the time to write what my brain is saying.
Maybe it would help me to start to take the time to put my book down and take a minute or 2 and write about the reactions that my brain is having and then I would use this strategy more.

One reading stategy I find myself using often is visualizing the story. Ithink I use this strategy the most because I can understand the story better because it is like playing a movie in my head. I am able to picture what a charcter might look like his face his features and I can see the scene by picturing what the trees may look like the in the surronding area. One reading strategy that I dont use to often is rereading the text. I that if I reread the text I would be able to comprehend the story better. I think I don't use this stratigie often because I rush thru things sometimes. I also think that if I reread the text I might figure out something that I missed the first time I read it.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is predictions. I don't use predictions very often because I would rather use questioning instead of predictions. I like questioning more
than predicting because questioning gives me more answers than predicting.

  77. One reading strategy I find myself doing a lot is having a mental picture running through my head almost like a movie. I always Imagen what the characters look like if I see them on the cover of the book or in a movie. sometimes if im reading right before bed I rewinding the mental picture that was in my mind and I replay it to see how I would feel.I see my self do that a lot . It seems like i'm doing it every time I read. I did it a lot on the book i just finished and it was sort of like a small preview of the movie.

    ReplyDelete
  78. One reading strategy that I find myself using often is visualizing. I don't even try to use this strategy when I read. When I really get into the story, the movie just starts playing in my head. For example, when I am reading The Lost Symbol, I can really sense and see the horror on Professor Langdon's face as he is being drowned in a plexi-glass casket.

One strategy I know I don't use enough is making inferences. I often read quite literally, and it is not until I am thinking later that some of my deeper understanding comes out. Some strategies I could use would be to reread and to stop and think for a bit while I am reading.

  79. I agree with Katie because I usually just skip over a word I don't know. I should probably look it up or use a dictionary.a way I could improve this strategy is I could write the word down a] and ask someone or when I get a chance look online or in the dictionary.

  80. Noah, I too really enjoy making predictions. I am reading The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. The book is full of twists and turns, and I really enjoy following the subtle clues to make predictions. I just can't stop reading until I find out if I am right or wrong! I am currently guessing that Mal'akh is Peter's son, and my Dad won't tell me if I'm right or wrong (he read it first)! So many hints lead me to believe this, but there have been many times that the author has intentionally taken me down the wrong path.

  83. 84. I agree with Julia, I sometimes have a mental picture what my character is going to like too. I personally really love thinking about what my character's are going to look like and when my book describes the places that their at I like to picture what the place will look like.

  85. One reading strategy I find myself using often is Imageing the book as a movie in my head.I think I use this strategy so much because it is one of the more funner easyer ways. For example in the book band of brothers I Imagine Buck Taylor going on AWOL for two days to find someone.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is wrighting in the RR section in my readers note book.I think I don't use this strategy much because I get so into my book I dont want to stop reading. Maybe it would help me to mark a time when to stop and jot and then I would use this strategy more.

  87. One strategy I use in my book “Twilight” is re reading because they introduce someone so fast and they don’t tell what the place looks like .I think I use this a lot because I don’t know what’s happing so I go back and re read. For example they just introduced Jacob Black and he knows Bella from his two sisters that are both married but how are they married there almost like Bella’s age . And one strategy I really don’t use a lot is visualizing because when someone describes a place I cant see it in my mind . I don’t use this strategy because I don’t get it . Its like spying on your brain. It might help me to see the place more .then I would use this strategy more . - claudia rupp

  88. One reading strategy I find myself using often is stop and jot. I think I use this strategy so much because I can just write down whatever if on my mind on the paper really quick and get back to reading. For example I could be reading "Molly just got a new car for her 18th birthday" I would want to just jot down a couple of thoughts that are on my mind such as "what kind of car" and "what color is it"

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is stop and draw. I think I don't use this strategy much because when I draw it takes me to long and I get lost in my story and I dont rmeember what I was reading about. Maybe it would help me to really visulize the action more and then I would use this strategy more.

  90. One reading strategy I find myself using often is predicting. I think I use this strategy most because I just want to know all the answers to my questions so badly that I assume an answer. For example, in my current book, Uglies, by Scott Westerfeild, I made a prediction that the main character, Tally was goig to run away and follow her friend, Shay.

One reading strategy that I know I don't use enough is "Stop and jot." I think I don't use this strategy because it interrupts my reading. I know that you say we should write down anything our brain says, but I sometimes have trouble stopping in my reading because I'm so involved in the book.Stopping frequently while reading ruins the story for me and slows down the momentum of the book that the author so carefully built. It is much easier for me to synthesize my reading all at the end. Maybe it would help me to just write down my basic thoughts during reading and then expand upon them when I'm done, then I would use this strategy more.

    ReplyDelete
  91. John, I also visualize my reading very well. In a good book it's automatic. Most times, my visualizations of characters and events are more vivid than the movie versions of books I've read. I find it annoying that the producers of movies have to change books so much to shape them into movies.

    ReplyDelete
  92. One reading strategy I always find myself using is making questions. I think I use it so much because I always have questions on the book when I'm "spying on my brain". For example, if you looked through my reading journal you would find a lot of questions. One strategy I don't use enough is the evaluating. I think I don't use it so much because I never take the time to think in the character's point of view. I could try to slow down while I'm reading to use this strategy more.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I agree with Michael because I always try to make a play in my head. It really helps when I am reading in my IRB. Also, that strategy might help me with evaluating.

  94. One strategy I use alot is making predictions.I think I use this strategy because my mind tends to wonder if the book I'm reading isn't that good, so I make myself stay focused by making predictions. However if I'm reading a good book I get so cought up in the book I have to stop reading so I make prediction which tend to alwaysbe either really close or really off. For example I'm reading the book Fablehaven and I keep making predictions about whether or not seth would do something bad or stupid when he found out about fairies.

One reading strategy that I find myself using a lot is visualization. I think that I use this so often because it comes so naturaly to me.I can picture an entire story in my head without thinking usually. One example of this is when I read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I could visualize everything from Zaphod's second head to the missiles turning into a sperm whale which fell to it's death wondering about who it was and why it was there.
One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is writing about reading. I think I don't use this strategy the best because I am still trying to train my brain to do this naturally. I am still writing about reading but I have to think that. It would be better if I could think " This is important, I should write it down." Maybe it would help me to write about my reading more often and then I would improve my use of this strategy.

    ReplyDelete

Owen, I also make inferences. They really help me out when stopping and jotting because they usually give me 2 to 3 things to write about. I think that they are really usefull also. They give you something to think about intensly. You can observe so many things and use infereces to piece together every thing and predict what will happen next.

  100. One reading strategy I find myself using often is context clues.I think I use this strategy so much because if I dont know what a word means I look at the words around it and I try to figure out the meaning of the word. For example, The man was very *daft* when he couldn't find his car keys, daft=mad.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is when I start reading I find out the book is on a higher level in reading and I dont know like EVERY word means.I think I don't use this strategy much because I usually just look at the cover and I read the back and it sounds good but it really isn't.Maybe it would help me to read the first 5 pages and see if its good for me or not and then I would use this strategy more.

One strategy I think I don't use enough is questioning because I just want to read it but I just don't know why I don't use it enough. I think I don't use it slot because I don't listen to my brain because I'm envisioning so much.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is writing down what i'm thinking. I think I don't use this strategy much because it makes me mad to always stop reading and stop and jot. For example if the story has three characters in it and as I am reading only two are talked about I feel I might have missed a clue of what happened to the other character.

One reading strategy I know I don't use enough is making predictions as I read. I think I don't use this strategy much because I don’t want to be disappointed if my prediction of the story doesn’t come true. Maybe if I use the prediction method on story’s that I do not find interesting it will motivate me to read them.

Alot of the times I will have synthesized in my mind but I don't know that I have done it and I often don't know what to write because I don't have a clear definition in my mind what synthesize means. However having a journal doesn't really keep me focoused, it more of makes me stressed out that I have to write something down. What I do, is I spy on my brain so it is easier to write down what I am thinking.

One way I do this is, in my book, perfect chemistry, there are a lot of parts that kind of give you a rush and sometimes make you re- read so I write it down or stop and jot.
One strategy I know I dont use enough is, is the making an inference strategy. I feel I dont use this enough because I forget to stop and just think about the things like making infrences. One way I could use this strategy is to stop for a while and think more deeply about what I just read.

Maybe it would help me to maybe read a little slower and not react so big when something interesting happens and then I would use this strategy more.
