Characterization

Authors make characters come to life through a literary device called characterization. Characterization means that an author has shown readers what the character is like through what the narrator says about the character, what other characters say about the character, what the characters says, and/or what the character does.

For this week's assignment, please:

1. Write a brief description of a favorite fictional character.
2. Tell me a detail from the text that let you create that description.
3. Identify whether the detail is the narrator saying something about the character, another character saying something about the character, what the character said, or what the character did.

  1. My favorite fictional character is Firestar from the Warriors series because he is a noble leader of Thunderclan and that he treats everyone fairly. One detail from the text is that when Firestar had to make a choice to do what is write for himself or the clan and he chose the clan. The detail is what the character(Firestar) did.

  2. Percy Jackson is 16 years old, not very tall for his age, slightly built and has long black hair. The details that helped me create the description is all of the details the author puts into the story. He described all of the features of the character. The deatil comes from all of the characterization skills listed above. Things like saying "I ran my hand through my black hair in nervousness". And also other characters saying that they were towering above him. Thats how I got the description of Percy Jackson.

  3. My favorite character of a fiction book would have to be Tiki and Rouge. They are both in a book called kickoff.A description of them is,that they are identical twins that really love to play football.I know that they are twins because in the book the narrater says that they are.I got the idea that they like football because in the very beggining they were playing and also because they were exited to play for the middle school that they were about to start the next day. That was what the characters did and what the characters said to each other.

  4. In the book Lightning Theif my favorite fictional character is Grover. HE is a sytar (half human half goat). He is one of percys frinds, he lives in the woods of camp halfblood. His wepon of choice is reed pipes, he can bring vines and entangle you and stuff like that.

  5. One of my favorite fictional characters is Ernie from the book Revenge of the Shadow King of the Grey Griffins series. Ernie is a clumsy character that always seems to accidently ruin everything even though he doesn't mean to. He is also a scaredy cat who is determined to get his tasks completed regardless of the risk.

One example from The Revenge of the Shadow King that let me create this description was when Max and Ernie were trying to keep the Codex(a magical book) away from the evil Morgan LaFey. Max tossed the Codex to Ernie, and Ernie dropped the book. LaFey's goblin captured the book. Even though Ernie dropped the book he bravely chased after the goblin determined to fix his mistake.

This detail is something the character did. When Ernie dropped the book and chased after the goblin, it showed me that Ernie may ruin things and be scared, but he is also determined to fix his mistakes and face his fears. Ernie is such a humorous, lovable character.

  6. Hi, This is from a short story called "Benny and Jordan"

The main character is Jordan, and he is very well rounded for a seventh grader. He is incredibly athletic, super popular, and has like, a million best friends.

The parts of the story that gave me all of the details about him is his growing friendship with a boy named Benny. Jordan has so many mishaps with Buddy that it makes the story more interesting.

The narrator is not Jordan nor Buddy, and I had a hard time deciding which one was the main character. But I finally found out that Jordan was trying to overcome his shyness around Benny.

I'll give you the link to this story. But I have to warn some people, as it may be offensive to them.

  7. Connor:Dark-brown hair with green eyes,fair skin,lean,strong,tallish(5.6),and considered handsome.
A detail from the story that helped me describe him was when the author introduced Grace, his twin sister, and had described her first.
"Grace was 12 years old with dark hair and bright green eyes that were always filled with curiosity. She was a bit shorter than her twin, Connor, and was mentaly stronger, while he was phsically strong.
The details I use to visualize him came from a character saying something about him, and what he doese daily. Thats how I get to "see" him better.

  8. In the book "Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy" Cammie is a brave, daring and curious person. Cammie is brave because she is willing to step up and be a leader. Cammie is daring because she snuck into the wing that was closed off not knowing what would be inside and Cammie is curious because when she hears her mom talking about the Blackthorne she looked for more information. There is more then one reason why Cammie is brave but I noticed that she was brave by the things she did. Cammie is daring because she jeopardized her education and the safety of the school. When Cammie realized that the teachers were lying to the students about why the wing was closed she had to investigate to find out why it was really closed.

  9. My favorite fictional character is Sam she is from the book " Missing Persons". Sam is one of the main character's in the book. She is strong and smart and the narrator which is her sister Sophie says that she never cries, she's really smart about making decisions, and she knows what she's doing most of the time unlike Sophie herself. I chose Sam as my favorite fictional character because she's a good person and she thinks before she does something and that's part of who I am.

  10. One of my favorite fictional movie character would be spongebob squarepants because hes funny. He lives in "Bikini Bottom" and he lives in a pineapple "under the sea" and his bestfreind is "Patrick Star" and his other so called friend Squidward tantiqles (forgot how to spell it,) but spingebob doesnt know that squidward seceretly hates him. A detail from that text is that spongebob is a person that people think is wierd. And that detail states what spongebob does and how the way he acts.

  11. A breif discription of my favorite fictional character is: 15 years old, out going strong{emotionaly}, good at surviving and clever...Can you guess who this is? Its Brian Robeson from "HATCHET" by Gary Paulson.
To make my description i went to my book "Hatchet" as i was reading and it showed many ways he became strong and adapted to survive the hardcore wilderness. One detail was making weapons and a shelter for himself so he could eat and have a safe place to sleep and stay alive.
This is something the character did as an action. He built his shelter {action} he made a bow and arrows {action} and he adapted to become stronger {action} these are all things he did physiclly to become a well enough being to survive in his environment.

  12. One of my favorite fictional characters is Firestar from "Warriors". He is a young male cat with a heart for adventure and a longing to join the wild cats of the forest. He is brave and also loving. He becomes a very strong warrior and has leadership qualities. He has bright orange fur and green eyes.
His courage and skills are shown through his actions. In the beginning of book 1 "Into the Wild", he is known as a house cat named Rusty. He ventures into the forest and a clan cat named Graystripe attacks him. Intstead of running away he stays and fights him. His abilities impress the clan leader Bluestar, and she gives him a choice. He can either go back home or abandon his easy life and join the forest cats. His bravery and strength show here because he was willing to give up everything for this other life and eventually leads the clan through tough times of danger.

He even has wrist blades that he can shoot at evil people. A detail from the text that let me create that description was when Hatter was going to find Alyss and he used his blades to kill all the evil people he saw. He didn't even get hurt because he is such a great fighter. He ended up finding Alyss after many years too. But he fought and never gave up.

  43. Kim, Cammie sounds like a very enjoyable character. The book also sounds very interesting. I like the way you wrote she is brave because..... she is daring because.... instead of just saying she is brave and daring. I think that was very explicit and it helped me get a feel for the character. I think the author of your book knows alot about characterization because you were able to really sum up Cammie.

Paula is a cute, strong-willed girl who seems to be very likable in almost every way.

The way I found out all of these details is from all of the fights she gets into, all the friends and powers that she has, and that she's adored by three psychokinetic boys named Tony, Jeff, and Todd.

The narrator is some kid from the future, who Paula meets in the fourth book. I haven't read most of the fourth book, but I know that the narrator thinks that Paula is quite stunning.

  48. One of my favorite fictional charaters is Edward from Twilight. I'm sure most of you have read, seen or at least heard of Twilight. Edward is a vampire with gold eyes and brown hair. He is fast, quiet, sneaky, strong, smart and really hot. I saw this description in my head when Bella the other main charater saw him for the first time in the cafeteria when she ws at lunch on her first day at her new school. Bella asked one of her new friends about Edward and found out how he was "adopted" and so were the other kids sitting at that table. Also he wasn't social. Also when it got into the story more I saw more of Edward's traits. For example when he saved bela from the car he showed his strength, speed, and quietness.

  51. My favorite ficitonal character is a vampire named Alice. Alice is a little bit short, and has spikey black hair, and she's very pale. Alice is very into fashion and looks. Detail from the book that led me to create that description was when the main character was sleeping over her house, Alice really wanted to have manicures and go shopping, and she loved to dress the main character (Bella) up for her prom. I know she looks that way because when the main character saw her for the first time, she was shocked by her extreme paleness, and she wondered how Alice and her siblings were related because she had spikey black hair and the others didn't. The detail is the narrator saying something about Alice. The story is in 1st person perspective, and it's told by the main character, Bella.

  52. Victoria - Edward is one of my all time favorites too!! I also think he's so hot, and I figured out his traits (gold eyes. bronze hair, strong, fast, quiet) through the narrator's (Bella's) description, too! 54. Jeremy B- I dont have a favorite character. I have read soooo many books I can't choose so I think that I'll just describe Ron Weasly. In the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Ron is chosen as a Gryfindor. He is then described as an orange haired kid with a lot of freckles. He has 2 trouble-making brothers and 4 other siblings. It says that he has to wear hand-me-downs from his 5 brothers so I can imagine his clothes not being the finest. I got of this information from the character Ron who said he got hand-me-downs and had 6 siblings. I also got some informaton from Malfoy, The Sorting Hat and the descriptions of him by other characters.

And he is the bravest guy.

  58. One of my favorite fictional characters in a book is "sissy" or Teresa from the book, Deep and Dark and Dangerous. Sissy is really a girl who drowned in a lake long ago. She is mean and nasty to some girls that moved near the lake she drowned in. Their names are Ali and Emma. She wants to take Emma and make her drown because she is lonely in the water. But Ali wont let her. Sissy is cruel because she wants to kill a small girl just not to be lonely. Sissy has an attitude because she would walk into the house of someone else and say "get me this" and "get me that" Sissy was mean even before she died. Sissy is mostly a bad influence on Emma because now that Emma is her friend, Sissy says that she is a baby and then Emma does the same! what gave me these ideas is when Sissy tries to drown Emma, and when she lies to them and steals. I like this character so much because she is the most interesting. She was the one who made the book so good.

Victoria Edward is my favorite too from Twilight. I saw the movie but never read the book. Yeah when he showed his strength by saving Bella from the car I was like Woah, he's strong and I was in shock. When I first saw Edward walking into the cafeteria my jaw dropped he's really handsome I thought. Edward was really brave to fight with James at that ballet studio just to save Bella.

  65. One of my fictional characters is Tally.
She is from the book I'm reading now and it is "Uglies". Tally is a kind of person who just cares about her looks not her education. She is a 16 year old girl who thinks that her looks aren't good enough and doesn't have self confidence. Also she does't listen to anybody close like her bestfriend Peris and shay. Shay tried to tell her that she shouldn't get the surgery because it isn't a smart thing to do. She is my favorite kind of fictional character because she doesn't listen to people but she isn't bossy like other girls that care about their looks also.

Most of the time the narrator is the one telling me all the details about Violet.

  79. My favorite ficional charater is Kristina.
Kristina only cares about her self. She doesn't care about what other people think, and sher doesn't care about her body. She doesn't have much of a tan. Details from the book helped me figure out that she was very much into love, and relationships. She was also into drugs. The book helped me identify those description was when she went to go vistit her dad and he asks her if she wanted a cigarette. The book also helped me identify that she was into love and relationships was when she was asked out by a boy named Adam feel in love with him, and got a tatoo to rememeber their love for eachother.

  80. One of my favorite fictional characters is Liesel in the book The Book thief. As the title implies, she has also been branded The Book Thief. She is a girl born and raised in Germany during World War II.

Liesel is a very determined girl who will stop at nothing to learn how to read. She even steals books just so she can practice reading. This act of hers proves that she has strong determination.

At the same time, she is a very aggressive girl. This description was made clear to me when the boy in the story was beaten to a pulp by Liesel because he called her stupid.

The twist to this book is that the story is narrated by Death! He has been describing the events of Liesel's life since the first day he met her.

  81. Tristin, you forgot to include in your post a character trait about Eragon. From what I remember, he was a extremely brave and he was always staring trouble in the face. He defeated the Shade and about half of the army sent by Galbetorix to destroy the Varden. This was an action by the character that showed that he was indeed very brave.

  82. One of the main characters in the "Clique" books that I read last year my favorite character was Claire. She isn't rich like Massie; she lived in Massie guesthouse until they had enough money for their own house. More then anything Claire wanted to be friends with Massie; even after she became friends with Massie (who was mean to her) she still seemed nicer.

  83. John- You are so lucky that you read the whole book "The Book Thief"! I started to read it last year, but Mrs. Haverty didn't approve. Your description filled in whatever I wanted to know, so I think I'll try to read The Book Thief after I finish the Twilight series (Again!!!)

PEACE TO ALL, HAPPY HALLOWS EAVE!!! XD

  84. My favorite fictional character is Katie from "Love You, Soldier". Katie's father is going to war and as she was getting ready to take her father to the tain station to say goodbye, she had to dress in something really fancy. The narrator(Katie) let me know that because,"My dress had pleats, and smocking near the collar. And my new party shoes- shiny like mirrors- tapped and clicked on the winding marble staris." I also found out the setting was back then. I identified that the main character, Katie said that. I know that because, "My dress had pleats, and my new party shoes." That is how i could tell wether or not who was saying it.

  85. The main character in the Eragon series is Eragon. He is troublesome, courageous, and young.
What let me know that Eragon is troublesome is that he always gets into some kind of battle wherever he goes. What showed me he is young is that he was pretend sword fighting with his cousin in the beginning of the first book. And he is courageous because he is willing to take on anyone. The details are the actions of the character or what the character did.

  87. A favorite fictional character of mine is Maximum Ride from the Maximum Ride series. Max is a genetic experiment, so she pretty much looks like a normal fifteen-year old girl, but with wings grafted into her back and super- strength. Max is very brave and is loyal to her family, but she mistrusts anyone who isn't her family. Max is also very stubborn.

Max's bravery and loyalty is shown through her actions. In the book, Max escapes from a lab full of mad scientists who want to experiment on her and kill her. Max's family is locked up, too. During Max's escape, she also frees her family.

Max's stubbornness an distrust is shown through what she says. Max always has to be in charge, and everyone has to do what she says because she's the leader of her "flock" which is what she calls her family. Max's "family" has no adults. It is a group of bird-kids ages 6-15.

Max's distrust is shown through her actions, also. Max thinks that everyone is trying to either capture her family, kill her family, or put her entire family in a zoo.

Maximum Ride is a very independent, strong character. She's the mother figure in her "flock."

  88. Amanda, I agree that Hatter Madigan is a really cool character. I like him because he was so determined to find Alyss and rescue her. My favorite character in The Looking Glass Wars was the Redd though, because she was such a great antagonist. I liked watching her be defeated at the end of the book.

  92. My favorite fictional character is Thomas Ward from The Last Apprentice. He is 15 years old, he is pretty tall, left handed, and he is able to destroy anything with a silver chain. A part from the text made me feel this way because he almost binded every creature there is. Tom Ward did all of this so it was what he did that made me think this way.

  93. I also think that Hatter Madigan is a cool guy because he would give up his life for the queen and princess. He's like a ninja because he does all of these backflips and corckscrews. It's so brave of him to do that even though he knows what he's up against.

  94. One of my favorite character is “Hermione” her mom and dad is not a wizard. She is also friends with Harry Potter and Ron Wesley. She Hates Draco Mauthfoy. She has auburn color hair and she has a pet cat. Her cat is not a big fan of Ron’s rat that much. They all met on the train going to Hogwarts. Harry Potter has dark brown hair. Ron has orange hair. They all hate Draco Mauthfoy. Harry Potter mom and dad died from “ The Darkness “. And that’s why Hermione granger is my favorite character.

  95. I agree with Michelle Danowski because I never read the book but it sounds quit interesting one thing that I liked that you put in there is that she doesn’t care what anyone thinks. And I think that is amazing thing that maybe if one person is trying to change them self to be someone else cause some said something bad about them cause when or if they read that is that maybe they will get confidence from that book. And well I was wondering why is she doing drugs though if she doesn’t care though .

  96. my favorite character would have to be Kristen Gregory from the The Clique book series. Kristen is smart and atheletic. Even though in the beginning of the book Kristen seems like all the other rich snobs Massie hangs out with, you find out that shes way more down to earth than she shows. Being that Kristen is acturally stuggling from financial troubles she understands what claire is going through.

  98. My favorite fictinal character is Edward from Twilight. He has brown hair and he is a vampire he has been in highschool for a lot of years beacuse he lives forever. A detail that told me that Edward was a vampire was he would go hunting all the time in the woods to get blood. The detail about Ecward being a vampire is not from the narriator telling me, its from another character saying something about him. And what the character does.

  99. Amy I agree with you about Max from the Maximum Ride series. I love her as a character because she is a very good leader and I think she is independent. And like you said she is very brave and I like how they show that in the book a lot. Like when she has to go threw a lot to just to get Angel.

  102. My favorite fictioal character is Elizabeth from Titanic The Long Night. Elizabeth had red curley hair with pale skin covered in occational freckles. She always wore her hair up and and always stood tall. In the begging of the story as Elizabeth entered the Grand Ballroom on the giant ship people commented on hert beuty and facial features. The other characters described her alittle but the narrator described Elizabeth the most.

  107. The character I chose is Greg from Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days. Greg is an average thirteen year old boy. He has two brothers. One is older than him and the other is younger. His best friends name is Ronald. His parents always take all of them on family gatherins which are usually to childish for him.

The detail that gave me this description is for Greg's birthday when he use to invite his friends his Mother would invite hers and they would always give him childish gifts. Now he only invites family.

The detail is what the character did.

  109. Victoria, Edward Cullen is also one of my favorite fictional characters. What I loved about Edward is that even though he was so tempted to suck Bella's blood, he loved her so much that he resisted and would do anything that he could to protect Bella. This showed me that Edward was a kind , loving character, and it showed me that Edward was a strong character because he didn't let his weakness stop him.

  110. One of my favorite fictional characters is Jamie from a Walk to Remember. Jamie is a selfless girl who happens to be diagnosed with lukimeia. The author shows several times in the book of how she is a caring character. For example, the author shows how Jamie helps out at the orphanage, helps people in the neighborhood and does alot of volunteer work at the church. The author also shows how Jamie loves god, because he shows how she is constantly reading the bible, and talking to others about god and his "plans". Jamie is also very forgiving and never gets angry at all of the people that make fun of her. Physically Jamie is a pretty girl but she doesn't often show it. She has light brown hair that she ties back in a bun every day. She also wears the same sweater and skirt daily.
I love how caring Jamie is, and I also love of how she has such great faith in god. I also love that she is so forgiving and helpful. Jamie is a good role model and the world would be a better place with more people like her.

  111. Emily - The characters you described Jordan and Benny both sound like real life friends. You described as they were typical kids wanting to be friends and you can put yourself in their shoes. There is always someone who is the outgoing friend and than there is always the friend who is more shy. Your description leads me to want to read the book.

  112. Ponyboy is a character from the outsiders, and he is one of my favorite characters. He has slick, black hair. He's sort of tough (well thats how he thinks he has to act), and he doesn't use his head a lot. The author described Ponyboy to the reader in the book. Ponyboy himself is narrating the story and describing himself.

Julia, i agree with you that Mrs. Bates is street smart, and knows how to take care of herself. i also liked how the author told the reader how she would talk with a southern accent.

  116. My favorite fictional character is Prince from out of the wild. He is a real prince from a fairy tail and he is clueless and is still trying to act like a prince.
He kept trying to pull his sword out on people and he found a slipper and was trying to fit it on girls feet.
I think it is another character saying something about Prince

  118. One of my favorite fictional characters is seth sorenson from the book fablehaven. Seth is adventorous, brave and sometimes stupid. one detail that lets me know seth is adventorous is that the first day he got to his grandparents he went exploring in the woods. One detail that allowed me to realize he was brave was when he found out about the fairies and all the dangerous creatures in the woods and he wasnt scared at all. after finding that out he was told not to open the door or window on mid summer eve. he wasnt supposed to even look out the window, however he looked out the window and opened it and caused great chaos in fablehaven. All of these forms of characterazation where what the character(seth) did.

I liked Michelle Danowski’s comment about her character because I never read the book but it sounds quite interesting. One thing that I liked that she said was that her character didn’t care about what anyone thinks. If a person is trying to change themselves to be like someone else just because some said something bad about them maybe if they read the book they will get the confidence to just like themselves the way they are. I was wondering why is she doing drugs though if she doesn’t care what other people think but she cares about herself.
